HP Director is helpful for bringing all of your printer’s functions together under one manageable interface. However, certain Director utilities, such as faxing, may not work if the PC can’t establish or maintain communication with the printer. An error message stating that your computer can't communicate with your Officejet may be caused by issues originating from the printer or the PC itself.
The Printer Is Off

When computer troubleshooting, the best course of action is to look for the easiest solution first. A powered down printer is one of the most common explanations of the “unable to communicate” message, especially if the printer is located away from where you’re working. Eliminate the most obvious culprit by checking to make sure the printer is on.
Disconnected Wires
Another frequent reason the error occurs is due to loose or damaged cables. Check the printer's USB or Ethernet cables to make sure they are securely attached at both ends and intact. You can also try switching between a USB connection and an Ethernet connection to determine if the problem is with only one of the connection types.
Wireless Connection Issues
You may also receive the error message if your wireless connection is offline or experiencing other communication issues. To reset the printer’s wireless connection to the computer, turn off the printer and the computer and disconnect the power cords from the printer and the wireless router. After 30 seconds, reconnect the router’s power cord, wait for it to finish rebooting, and then restart the computer. After Windows fully loads, reconnect the printer’s power cord and turn it on. If this process doesn’t work, follow the more advanced wireless connection troubleshooting solutions on the HP Support Center pages (see link in Resources).
To use Amfphp, download it here and then install it on your web server online or on your computer (local). Your server must run PHP 5.1 or more. Your server must run PHP 5.1 or more. Your server should be configured so that making requests to a folder defaults to index.php, because the documentation and examples assume this.
A Software Update is Necessary
You may receive the “unable to communicate” error if your printer’s drivers, software or firmware is out of date. You can find the most recent updates by searching for your printer’s model number on the HP Support Center page (see link in Resources). If your printer has the Web Services function, you can check for updates directly from your printer by tapping the “ePrint” icon on the printer’s control panel screen, selecting the “Settings” option and tapping “Check for Update Now.”
The Service is Disabled
The services Windows uses to run and communicate with peripherals such as printers are usually enabled automatically. However, new software, hardware or even user error can cause the computer to deactivate these processes, leaving the printer and computer unable to connect. Make sure the HP communication service is enabled by pressing “Windows-R,” typing “service.msc” and clicking the “Run” button. Look through the list of services until you locate an entry labeled “PML Driver HPZ12” for USB connections or 'Net Driver HPZ12' for network connections. Double-click the appropriate one and select “Automatic” from the Startup Type drop-down box under the General tab. Restart your computer and printer to allow the changes to take effect.
