When the HP support web site says 'Install the Driver Using Windows Update with a USB Connection (Downloadable Driver Not Available)' it means that you should connect the printer to your computer and turn on the printer. The 'Found New Hardware' wizard should open and you should get a screen that looks like this:
Select the radio button to permit Windows to connect to Windows Update (I suggest 'this time only') and click Next to complete the wizard. After some period of time, which may be rather long, Windows should find and download the driver and the installation should proceed.
If the above doesn't work (for example, you don't get that screen), you can also install the printer as follows.
- Do not connect the printer to the computer
- Click Start and then Devices and Printers
- Click 'Add a printer'
- Select 'Add a local printer'
- On the 'Choose a printer port' screen, select the radio button for 'Use an existing port.' You can leave the default in the drop-down list at LPT1: (Printer Port). Click 'Next.'
- On the 'Install printer driver' screen, select HP in the left pane. You can scroll through the list of printers on the right side, but you should not find the Deskjet 3745 (or Deskjet 3740 series) listed.
- Click the 'Windows Update' button (see screenshot below)
- Wait
- Wait more. This will take a long time, but eventually, Windows Update will finish and the list of printers will now include 'HP Deskjet 3740 Series (LiDiL)'. Select this one and click 'Next.'
- Change the printer or not, as you like
- Complete the wizard to install the printer drive
- Connect the printer to your computer and turn it on. Windows should detect the printer and install it using the driver you just installed.
