PCs can be upgraded to a new operating system in two different ways known as “In-place Upgrade” and “Clean Install”.

During the In-place upgrade, your files, software and settings remain intact and will be available to you after you upgrade. This is the easier and faster method to upgrade and is the better option for most people.

The Clean Install deletes all the software, settings, and personal files on your PC. You will need to reinstall your applications and manually reinstall your personal files from backup. The Clean install will take longer than the In-place Upgrade.

Regardless of which method you choose, you should always back up your personal files and create HP recovery media before starting an upgrade.
