Hello Experts, a driver problem is bringing me to my wits end and I need some solid advice to get back to work.
After switching a USB hub, I have persistent driver problems with two USB devices and just can't get the MS Natural ergonomic keyboard 4000 and the Logitech Z-10 speaker back to work/ their drivers to install.
Upon plugging in, Windows tries to install and search for the drivers and ends up reporting: 'No driver found', and both devices end up with the exclamation mark in Device Manager.
Both devices have worked perfectly on the same box just a few days ago, before having to rearrange the plugs in the USB hub.
In the last two days of research and trying to fix this, I have twice tried uninstalling all USB controllers/ devices and rebooted. All other USB devices have reinstalled as expected and are in working order.
(Note: In plugging the USB devices back in one by one, I had to manually assign the drivers for the USB hubs (icrom ranger (a USB extender via Cat5), D-Link and Eizo (in monitor)). Somehow, they were not recognized automatically. Here I chose (Standard USB Host Controller) as Manufacturer, and 'USB Root Hub' as Model, which was accepted. Then the devices connected to the hubs were automatically recognized by the standard Windows driver install routine.
I am using my notebook via Logmein to control the box where the keyboard is not working..)
I also have uninstalled/ reinstalled the Intellitype software multiple times.
I have tried to choose the keyboard drivers in Device Manager manually.
Logitech told me, that no Logitech drivers are needed for the USB speakers, only the Windows drivers are used.
I have used USB Device Tree Viewer (from uwe-sieber.de) to identify all USB items and the associated info.I have used USBdeview (from Nirsoft.net) to get an overview of ports and cleaned out any registry entries of all old devices, then tried plugging back in - problem remains
I have plugged in, turned off, rebooted, uninstalled drivers and such numerous times, but I can't get Windows to install the drivers!
To test, I also have plugged both troublesome devices in a Windows 7 64bit Ultimate Notebook, and they installed just fine there and are working.
The Keyboard when plugged in to the notebook installed in 3 'steps/ items':
1) USB Composite
2) MS Hardware USB Keyboard
3) USB Input device
The Speaker installed there in 4 'steps/ items':
1) USB Composite
2) Z-10 USB Speaker
3) USB Input device
4) USB Input device
Trouble is, if I try to manually assign a driver to a device, even if I knew the right one, these devices seem to need 3 resp. 4 drivers/ subdrivers.. and I don't know how to assign/ install them without an *.inf file. Normally, this would happen automatically, but some entry or routine may be corrupt?
So I am stuck with no keyboard and no sound and am looking for help in this deadlock.

Device Driver Software Installation

I am looking forward to your expert advice!
Thanks,
Thorsten
P.S.:
OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit (Standard), which is used as a workstation.
Unfortunately, going back to a restore point, backup of rollback is not an option, as there are no sufficiently recent points

spritemv, do an SFC scan for me, let's see what the results are:

The System File Checker tool:

To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
  2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
  3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
  4. When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

Although your Issue might not be tied with protected system files, I am checking if you have any other corruptions on your system.
It maybe that your Windows Installation has picked up corruptions over time from program installations.
Lets continue:
What happens when you bootup with a memory card inserted into your card reader, does it make a difference in recognition?
If this is a device that you personally installed, can you check the OEM for any possible driver upgrades we can use?

Check Device Status and Driver Version:

  1. Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clickingControl Panel, clickingSystem and Maintenance, and then clickingDevice Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. Double-click the category containing your device driver, and then double-click the name of the device.
  3. Check the Device status under the General tab. Click Driver tab, check Driver Provide, Driver Date, Driver Version, Digital Signer. Please provide this information.
  4. Click OK, exit DeviceManager.

See If you can completely uninstall and reinstall your card reader with the following steps, please check the categories for the once installed thumbdrive you mentioned to see if we can remove that as well:

Uninstall Hidden Device Drivers:

  1. Click Start -> click All Programs -> click Accessories -> right-clickCommand Prompt, select Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each):
  3. SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
  4. devmgmt.msc
  5. When in Device Manager, click View then Show hidden devices
  6. Expand the category containing your device, and then double-click the name of your device.
  7. Click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall.
  8. If there is a Delete the driver software for this device box, check it (make sure you have internet connectivity so that you may reacquire these drivers). Read and Confirm Notification, click OK.
  9. Exit Device Manager, and restart your computer.
  10. You will be prompted with Found New Hardware. Select Locate and install driver software. Confirm permissions. Windows will now search for your hardware driver and reinstall it.
  11. Test the device again

Device Driver Software For Windows 7

After you run this script, any programs that installed custom CD/DVD filter drivers may not be able to use your CD/DVD until your reinstall those programs. If the command script doesn't resolve the problem, you can simply restore your custom CD/DVD Filter drivers by double-clicking the FiltersBackup.reg that the command script exports to your desktop. If the issue is resolved, delete the DeleteFilters.cmd file that you created.
